Océan Surf Report : Bonjour Nuno, peux tu te présenter rapidement pour les internautes de Océan Surf Report ?
Nuno Matta : Je suis une personne comme tout le monde qui aime passer du bon temps, en particulier en surfant et en shapant...
OSR : Depuis combien de temps shapes-tu ? D'où vient cette passion pour le shape ?
NM : J'ai commencé à shaper en 1994 et c'est à ce moment là que j'ai créé MATTAshapes. Mais c'est en 2003 que je me suis réellement investi à 100%. Pendant quelques années, j'ai travaillé avec plusieurs shapers internationaux comme Xanadu, Ricardo Martins, Joca Secco, Tim Patterson, Darcy, Bill Johnson, Pyzel et bien d'autres. J'ai shapé en Californie pour Tim Patterson et deux fois à Rio pour Ricardo Martins et Joca Secco. En 2010, durant mes débuts à SUPERbrand, j'ai pu shaper pour quelques uns des meilleurs surfeurs du monde, notamment Travis Logie, Brett Simpson, Jordy Smith, Chris Davidson, Dion Agius, Damien Hobgood et j'en passe...
OSR : Comment travailles-tu ? Quelle est ta philosophie ?
NM : Travailler dur !!
À SUPERbrand, on a le Shapers Collective. C'est un regroupement des meilleurs shapers des quatres coins du globe, qui se partagent expériences et idées dans le but de créer les meilleures planches possibles. C'est tout simplement un échange ou collaboration des différents shapers pour que le shaping puisse évoluer régulièrement.
OSR : Pour qui shapes-tu ? Quelles sont tes créations favorites ?
NM : Je shape pour quelques uns des meilleurs surfeurs du monde, notamment Travis Logie, Brett Simpson, Jordy Smith, Chris Davidson, Dion Agius, Damien Hobgood...
En Europe, je shape aussi pour Adrien Toyon, Francisco Alves, Tomás Valente, João Moreira, Yael Pena, Arthur Lassée, Angelo Bonomelli, Roberto D´Amico...
OSR : Quels types de boards aimes-tu shaper ?
NM : J'aime shaper des planches de haute performance
OSR : Est-ce que la technologie à un impact sur ton travail ?
NM : La technologie est présente aujourd'hui dans tout le processus de construction des planches. En Europe, une nouvelle gamme de matériaux fait son apparition comme :
- The Eco Construction, à partir de matériaux recyclés et durables
- The FutureFlex EPS, des matériaux de forte densité pour plus de vitesse et de contrôle
- XTR, des matériaux très résistants et hydrophobes.
OSR : Quelles sont les nouvelles tendances ou styles de shapes ?
NM : En général, aujourd'hui les planches sont de plus en plus petites mais elles sont plus épaisses, tout dépend de leur utilisation. Cette année SUPERbrand propose quatre nouvelles planches ; les FF Collection et les Fast and Fun sont les planches des riders Clay Marzo, Ry Craike et Dion Agius.
SUPERmadness2, SUPERcraft2 et SUPERmastablasta2 sont les planches de choix pour les petites vagues de cet été.
Et enfin la SUPERanswer est un modèle polyvalent, parfaite pour toutes les sortes de vagues.
OSR : Tu es un excellent surfer, où aimes-tu aller surfer ? Quels sont tes spots favoris ?
NM : Au Portugal, j'ai l'habitude de surfer à Costa de Caparica, c'était juste à côté de chez moi. Mon spot favori est l'île de Madère, il y a rien de mieux pour surfer !!
OSR : Quels sont tes projets pour cette année 2012 ?
NM : En 2012, je veux continuer mon travail et augmenter la notoriété de SUPERbrand du mieux que je peux.
OSR : Surfes-tu souvent sur internet ? Connais-tu Océan Surf Report ?
NM : Quand je suis en France, je check Océan Surf Report pour toutes les prévisions. Je consulte régulièrement le site pour les vidéos, les news, les photos...

Ocean Surf Report : Hi Nuno, could you describe yourself in a few words for our readers ?
Nuno Matta : I'm just a pretty normal guy who likes to surf, to shape and have a lot of fun !
OSR : How long have you been shaping ? Where did this passion come from ?
NM : I started shaping in 1994 when I created MATTAshapes. But it was in 2003, that I began to dedicate myself 100%. During these years I worked with several international shapers like Xanadu, Ricardo Martins, Joca Secco, Tim Patterson, Darcy, Bill Johnson, Pyzel, among others. I've already shaped in California for Tim Patterson and twice in Rio de Janeiro, in Wetworks' factory, for Ricardo Martins and Joca Secco. In 2010 with my entry in SUPERbrand, I was able to shape for some of the world's best surfers such as Travis Logie, Bret Simpson, Jordy Smith, Chris Davidson, Dion Agius, Damien Hobgood and others.
OSR : What is your philosophy and how do you work ?
NM : Work hard to get hard !
In SUPERbrand we have the Shapers Collective. Shapers Collective are shapers from different parts of the globe sharing information to make better surfboards and create a SUPERbrand. It's a team of SUPERbrand shapers and designers who collaborate to produce the most innovative surfboards with and for the most progressive surfers on the planet. In other words, shapers with rich and extensive board-building backgrounds create boards in your area and know the waves and conditions you surf. The shapers of the collective bounce concepts around, constantly one-upping each other in the race to make a better shortboard. It's open minded, it's competition, it's collaboration, it's innovation ? it's Shaper's Collective!
OSR : Who did you shape for ? What are your favorites creations ?
NM : As I said before, I shaped for some of the world's best surfers such as Travis Logie, Brett Simpson, Jordy Smith, Chris Davidson, Dion Agius and Damien Hobgood.
And in Europe I shape for Adrien Toyon, Francisco Alves, Tomás Valente, João Moreira, Yael Pena, Arthur Lassée, Angelo Bonomelli, Roberto D´Amico ?.
OSR : What kind of boards do you like to shape ?
NM : High performance surfboards.
OSR : Does technology have a strong impact on your work ?
NM : Technology is also inherent in the new materials and in the way you approach surfboard making. We will have available in Europe a new range of materials like :
The Eco Construction is a recycled EPS blank with Eco Friendly / renewable source epoxy resin.
The FutureFlex EPS is a completely custom surfboard shaped out of high density EPS foam with a parabolic carbon fiber frame to create a board with a high energy, rapid spring back resulting in ultimate speed and drive.
XTR, the main advantages are strength and imperviousness to water absorption. It is very resistant to impact and compression.
OSR : What are the new tendencies / trends in shaping ?
NM : In general, the boards have been decreasing in size and increasing in width and thickness, following the surf tendencies and maneuvers.
This year 2012, SUPERbrand presents 4 new models: FF Collection, Fast and Fun, which are the 3 pro models of team rider´s, Clay Marzo, Ry Craike and Dion Agius.
SUPERmadness2, SUPERcraft2 and SUPERmastablasta2 are the ideal boards for weak and small summer' waves.
SUPERanswer is a model somewhere between the SUPERtoy and SUPERburnside. A board that rips in every kind of waves, can quite literally do it all.
OSR : You're also an excellent surfer, tell us where you usually go surfing ? What are your favorites spots ?
NM : In Portugal, I used to surf in Costa de Caparica, right next to my place. My favorite spot is Madeira Island, definitely !
OSR : What are your plans for 2012 ?
NM : In 2012 I want to keep on the good work, continue to increase SUPERbrand in Europe, as much as possible.
OSR : Do you often surf on internet ? Have you heard about Ocean Surf Report ?
NM : Sure, when I'm in France I go on to Océan Surf Report to check the forecasts. Anyway, I used to go to Océan Surf Report to see the news, interviews, photos ?.
